Meditation with Mala in the tradition of Kundalini Yoga

A Mala is a simple and effective tool that can help reduce stress and increase wisdom, patience and health.

How to use a mala?

A mala can be used with any hand. Always start with the bead next to the guru bead (the biggest bead). As you repeat the mantra, move each bead with your thumb toward the body, over the meridian point as explained below. With each repetition of the mantra, move only one bead per mantra, not per syllable or word. For example: when you recite the mantra SAT NAM WAHE GURU, move only one bead for the entire mantra. To start again, turn the mala to return from the same side, you should never pass the guru bead. Move the beads toward you and continue your mantra.

You can use a Gemstones Mala and you will benefit from the unique properties of each gemstone.

The use of the different fingers with the mala

Every finger you use is related to a different part of the brain. When you pass the mala on the meridian point of the desired finger, you create a different result. The meridian point is located next to each finger, between the fingertip and the first knuckle:

  • Index finger (Jupiter): wisdom, knowledge and prosperity
  • Middle Finger (Saturn): increase patience
  • Ring finger (Sun): promotes health, vitality and strengthens the nervous system
  • Pinky finger (Mercury): ability to communicate and intelligence
Using your mala with a mantra

You can use any affirmation or mantra of your preference. The recitation of your mantra can be done in silence, whispering or aloud. You can do them informally while you spend your day or in a deep meditative state. Sit cross-legged on the floor or in a chair with your feet on the floor. Sit with your spine straight, with your chest out and chin in. You can focus your eyes on the third eye. Recite your mantra with your mala, as described above for 11, 31 or 62 minutes. Remember to listen to your mantra, use the navel point and stimulate the meridians with your tongue.

Some examples of meditations with Mala
  • To improve your health: Move the mala on the finger of the Sun (ring) with the mantra SAT NAM or WAHE GURU or SAT NAM WAHE GURU or a personal affirmation of healing.
  • To reduce stress and anxiety: Move the mala on the finger of Jupiter (index) for wisdom or the finger of Saturn (medium) for patience. Use the HAR or WAHE GURU mantra or a personal affirmation to reduce stress.
  • For prosperity: Move the mala on Jupiter’s finger (index) for wisdom, knowledge and prosperity or on the finger of Mercury (pinkie) to increase communication skills. Recite the mantra HAR or WAHE GURU. Prosperity can also be measured in immaterial terms. Being able to sacrifice, to be tolerant, giving, compassionate and have spiritual peace are also states of prosperity. These are attributes that cannot be bought. They are gems in immaterial forms.
